The Ubuntu 23.04 release is out on April 20 and to help hype its arrival I put together a video to show off the most striking changes.
Not that news of what’s new in Ubuntu 23.04 will be a surprise to those of you who read this blog regularly — oh, I know: I make that exact same joke every six months I post one of “these”. Thing is, I could ask ChatGPT for new material but since it was trained on my typo-laden content, it’d likely be just as derivative 😅.
All told, Ubuntu 23.04 is a minor but worthwhile update. GNOME 44’s fab features and Linux kernel 6.2 are the headline draws, but the fabulous new Flutter-based installer will be an instant hit with those performing fresh installs (not least of which is because the partition manager, vital when dual-booting, is more robust).
That said, I do feel like this interim release is a little lighter than it could’ve been. It’d be nice to see Ubuntu devs be a bit bolder and add more value of their own (outside of snaps). Some of Ubuntu’s software choices are fairly stale — is Totem anyone’s favourite video player? — and a few recent design decision feel a little off-key.
I don’t really need to say much else though — hit play on the embed at the top of this post to catch the video in-situ, or yeet yourself to YouTube so you can watch it there. If you don’t already subscribe to the channel then I’d be honoured if you’d consider it —as I’ve got some more videos in the works!
Finally, be sure to let me know what you think about this Ubuntu release down in the comments. I’d really keen to know what parts people are enthused about (and find out if I’m the only one mildly enthused by larger avatars on the login screen ). 🤭
